Bullying and Harrassment

Facts

Did you know that...

Bullying is a major problem for kids around the world. It's definitely a major hassle for Canadian youth.

A few facts:

  • A survey of students in grades 6, 8 and 10, conducted for the World Health Organization in 1997/98 showed that about 1/3 of Canadian students reported being bullied at least once, and 1/3 to 1/2 admitted they bullied others over the past term.
  • Across schools , 39 to 64% of secondary students agree that "bullying is just a normal part of being a kid."
  • For some Canadian students, bullying is a constant difficulty; 10-11% of students report that they are bullied every day or every week . That's over 60,000 victims in BC alone.
  • Some provinces have introduced a $250 fine for bullying.

Remember just because bullying is common, doesn't mean it's ok. In many cases, it's also illegal - and can be prosecuted.
